Getting your Lawn and Garden Ready for Winter

leaves in the fallNow is the time to get your lawn and gardens ready for winter.  The weather is warm, so there is no excuse for not doing a little work outside.
You might think it is all a bit overwhelming, but break the job down into smaller tasks and you will be amazed how fast things go.

Start by raking your leaves off the lawn and get them to your compost pile or to the curb. Using a small electric or gas powered blower that converts into a vacuum is a great way to get the leaves out of the shrubs.  Next, cut down your perennials to within 6” of the ground.

Give your shrubs a quick pruning, to remove any crossing branches or dead patches form summer.  Leave plants with interesting branches or flower heads until spring.  Hydrangeas look great during winter with a little tuft of snow on the flower.  Grasses can be left until spring too, but you might need to tie them to keep them from spreading apart with snow load.

That brings me to the last thing.  If you have upright shrubs like Cedars or Junipers, take some twine and wrap the shrub from bottom to top, pulling the twin tight so that the shrubs is bunched together.  This will keep snow load from breaking or bending branches over wither.  Any of the these jobs can be left to the last minute, but you don’t want to be doing these jobs in the snow.  If you don’t have time, or you just don’t want to do it, give us a call at Wright Landscape Services or visit us online at www.wright.on.ca
